The new academic year has kicked off at HSE University. Rector Nikita Anisimov greeted the students, staff and particularly new arrivals on Knowledge Day—September 1, which, as he emphasised, symbolises the beginning of a new journey and new achievements.

Ekaterina Mikhailova graduated from HSE University’s Political Science programme in 2019 and is convinced that the knowledge she gained is relevant to the challenges of modern business. She currently holds the position of Head of Strategic Development at Changellenge. In this interview, she spoke about what political scientists do at HSE University, how HR professionals respond when they have doubts about an applicant, and what soft skills are needed to successfully pass an interview.

Four years ago, orientalist and Vietnamese philology expert Yulia Minina began teaching at HSE University’s newly-opened Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies. In this interview with Age-Mates, she spoke about an expedition to describe the language of the Gelao people that she joined as a second-year student, how Oriental studies determine a person’s perceptions, and why she is grateful to her new academic home.

The start of a new academic year is an excellent time to plan the next steps in your academic career. On September 1, HSE University announced the start of its annual Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC-2022). Participation is open to students of Russian and international universities and to 2022 graduates. Last year, a total of 2,196 papers were submitted to the SRPC, of which 435 were from external participants.

On September 1–3, the HSE International Laboratory of Algebraic Topology and Its Applications will host the international conference 'Computer Methods of Cognitome Analysis'. Konstantin Sorokin, Research Assistant at the Laboratory and organiser of the conference, spoke about the main topics of the event and his hope that it will inspire pure mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists to apply their knowledge and intuition to the problems of brain-function mechanisms.

TASS has held a press conference devoted to the results of the admissions campaigns of three leading Russian universities: MGIMO, HSE University, and Bauman University. The universities’ rectors revealed the most popular fields of study and other details of the admissions campaigns. The key results of the HSE University admissions campaign include greater demand for the campuses outside Moscow, an increase in the number of enrolments by winners of olympiads, and the university’s continued popularity among foreign applicants.

Researchers from HSE University studied the perception of social robots (robots that are able to communicate with people and assist them with various needs) in everyday situations. They studied the perception of such factors as the robots’ appearance, speech, interaction situations, as well as the respondents’ characteristics. The scholars found that androids are more desirable in various situations than humanoids (robots that only vaguely resemble humans).

HSE University is one of the best Russian universities (4th place) and consistently ranks among the top 150 best universities in the world (142nd place) according to the Three University Missions world ranking that has been published since 2017.
