Optimism Makes Algorithm for Reinforcement Learning More Effective
An international team of scientists from Russia, France and Germany (including researchers of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, the HSE Artificial Intelligence Centre and the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute) have developed a new reinforcement learning algorithm (Bayes-UCBVI). This is the first Bayesian algorithm that has a mathematical proof of effectiveness and has been successfully tested in Atari games. The result was presented at the ICML-2022 conference.
HSE Faculty of Computer Science Team Takes Bronze at ICPC
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals took place on November 6–11 in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The team from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) took ninth place, winning bronze and achieving the best result among Russian universities.
Research Finds Genes Associated with Most Aggressive Kidney Cancer
HSE researchers have found genes characteristic of the most aggressive subtype of clear cell renal carcinoma. Having studied data on tumour samples from 456 patients, Grigory Puzanov, research fellow at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science International Laboratory of Bioinformatics, identified cancer subtypes associated with either a favourable or unfavourable course of the disease. The paper is published in Scientific Reports.

In 2022, 17 articles by the researchers of HSE Faculty of Computer Science were accepted at the NeurIPS (Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems), one of the world’s most prestigious events in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The 36th conference will be held in a hybrid format from November 28th to December 9th in New Orleans (USA).
‘Defining Yourself: Subject / Process / Identity’: New Exhibition Opens at HSE ART GALLERY
From November 9 to December 4, the HSE ART GALLERY is hosting an exhibition of works by students and lecturers of the HSE Art and Design School. The ‘Defining Yourself: Subject / Process / Identity’ exhibition lays the foundation of a multidisciplinary project about building connections between folk crafts, artistic practices, and modern research. The exhibition also has a parallel programme in the form of a curatorial excursion, an open talk, and an evening of performances.

On November 5, the Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow hosted an HSE-organised event entitled 'Cosmic Bodies: A Philosophical and Musical Party for Cyborgs'. The speakers and the audience reflected on popular-culture depictions of humans as they explore outer space.
Students of HSE Art and Design School Take All Prizes at ADCR Awards
Eight works by students of the HSE Art and Design School are among the winners in the ‘Students’ category of the ADCR Awards, a Russian professional competition in the field of creativity, design and advertising. HSE students won all gold, silver and bronze awards. Many student works were also included in the shortlist of the competition, while Evgeny Kashirin, lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School, was named tutor of the year.
Where Languages and Cultures Meet
The Bachelor’s in Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication combines traditional approaches to foreign language teaching with innovative educational practices. The programme has attracted a lot of international students thanks to the opportunity to enrol in the English track and study all its courses in English. The Bachelor's programme 'Philology' welcomes both Russian and international students. We talked to Mikhail Beshimov, who entered HSE University-St Petersburg via the HSE International Olympiad and came to study from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. In the interview, he shared his experience of participating in the Olympiad, the difficulties of moving to Russia and his first months study. Mikhail also shared some advice for international applicants who want to enrol in the Philology programme at HSE University-St Petersburg.
