In an interview with HSE News Service, HSE Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin discussed HSE University’s transition to distance learning, what changes students can expect in the next academic year, and why digital skills are important even for students in the humanities.

‘I started learning Russian in Italy. I’ve lived in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but came to Nizhny Novgorod to learn Russian in “real” Russia and become an international journalist’: Alessandro Caglio, first-cohort graduate of the Master’s programme ‘Literature and Media’, speaks about intercultural communications, hypertext novels, and the Russian winter.

A new Master of Public Administration (MPA) programme has been developed by the Moscow School of Administration Skolkovo, HSE University, Strelka Institute, and the New Economic School, at the initiative of VEB.RF. The programme will teach a total of 500 participants, with the aim of developing administrative staff for 100 Russia’s biggest cities.

When students enrol in master’s programmes at HSE University, they can count not only on getting new knowledge and skills, but a job as well. Many graduate students start working at departments of the University during their first year of study, and in most cases, their position is related to their field of study.

The summer final exam session at HSE University (as well theses defences) was conducted completely online. The HSE News Service talked to international students about what they thought of the new knowledge assessment technologies and how they would like to take exams in future.

Young women are often discouraged from careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), resulting in fewer young engineers and programmers entering the labour market. A study by Natalia Maloshonok and Irina Shcheglova examines how and why gender stereotypes can disempower female students, leading to poor academic performance and high dropout rates.

Abdelilah Ghazioui first came to HSE Moscow in January 2015 to attend a winter school. He liked the experience so much that he decided to enrol in HSE’s Master’s programme in Public Policy and Political Analysis the same year. In an interview with HSE News Service, Abdelilah looks back on his studies at HSE and life in Moscow and talks about his non-profit organization.

In a recent study, HSE University researchers analyzed and ranked the responses of 48 countries to the coronavirus pandemic. National responses were evaluated with regard to three factors: medical care, social support, and economic support. Among the 48 analyzed countries, Russia placed 7^th, while Australia ranked the first.
